Byron Charles "Pogo" CHAMBERLAIN Jr. 1953 - 2005
OBITIUARIESS - BILLINGS GAZETTE - July 29 2005 SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Byron Charles Chamberlain, Jr., "Pogo," a talented artist, athlete and educator, lost his battle with cancer on July 25, 2005.

He was born in Billings on June 17, 1953, to Dorothy (Halvorsen) and Byron Chamberlain, Sr.

Viewing will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A celebration of Byron's life will be held on Saturday, July 30, at 10 a.m., at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. The wearing of bright colors is requested.

Byron was active in sports his entire life. He participated in track, basketball and football, and quarterbacked the Billings Senior High Broncs during his junior and senior years. Byron graduated from Billings Senior in 1971 and continued his education and football career, first at Rocky Mountain College and then at Eastern Montana College.

Byron graduated from Eastern in 1976 with degrees in both Business and Art. He worked as a commercial artist for a year before returning to Eastern where he earned a Master's Degree in Special Education and Guidance Counseling. In 1979, Byron accepted a position with Sheridan County School District #2. He served as a Learning Specialist and then as a School Counselor at both Sheridan Junior and Senior High Schools for the next 26 years.

On June 19, 1982, Byron married Jane Howe in Miles City.

Coaching was one of Byron's passions. He coached basketball, football and track at Sheridan Junior High School. During the 13 years he was an assistant football coach at Sheridan High School, the Broncs won the state championship three times. Byron also coached his own children for many years in community sports.

Byron loved walking with his wife, snowboarding and spending time with his family. The YMCA proved to be a favorite hangout for handball. He had a terrific sense of humor, a love of old movies (particularly those from the '70s), and the ability to play the piano or organ by ear.

Survivors include Jane, his wife of 23 years; his daughter Kelsey (21), and son Beau (18), all of Sheridan; his parents of Billings; two sisters, Mary Ann Connors of Billings and Lori Herbaugh of Littleton, Colo.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
