Woman crossing US 287 in wheelchair hit, killed

By Jon Pilsner Loveland Reporter-Herald

A woman died Monday after she was hit by a car on U.S. 287 while attempting to cross the highway on a motorized wheelchair.

Deborah McCoul, 54, of Loveland, died at McKee Medical Center after she was hit by a car at around 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. 287 and 64th Street in north Loveland.

McCoul was crossing the five-lane highway in her motorized wheelchair from east to west, but was not on a crosswalk or stoplight intersection, said Loveland Police Sgt. Jan Burreson.

When McCoul approached the left southbound lane of the highway, 39-year-old Dana Farricker, also of Loveland, struck McCoul.

McCoul was transported to McKee Medical Center and later pronounced dead by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The accident spread debris over a wide area of the highway, and investigators reduced traffic to one lane in each direction for two hours while they investigated the scene.

Police said they don’t suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The case will be reviewed by the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether to file charges in the accident.
