John F. Maurer, 58, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his sister’s home in Ranchester.

Memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Big Horn Mountain Eagles 4169 with aerie officers officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Born Dec. 20, 1951, in Minot, N.D., to Harold and Ora (Howie) Maurer, he moved with his family to Sheridan in 1953, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1971.

He worked for Holly/Imperial Sugar for 25 years, then Big Horn Sanitation for 10 years.

Mr. Maurer enjoyed hunting, fishing, dartball, pitching horseshoes, taking wildlife photos, and spending time with family and friends.

He was a member of Big Horn Mountain Eagles 4169, Moose Lodge and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Janet Richards and Hazel Rotolo.

His longtime companion was Deb Hale.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and Clifford of Sheridan; a daughter, Melissa Adsit of Sheridan; a brother, James Maurer of Sheridan; two sisters, Connie Mairs of Wasilla, Alaska, and Helen Deutsch of Ranchester; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may benefit Big Horn Mountain Eagles 4169 Children's Fund, 1760 Commercial Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801, or Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan.
