Richard James Taberna, 62, of Big Horn died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at his home.

Memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Born Sept. 20, 1947, in Sheridan to Joseph and Joan Taberna, he attended Holy Name Catholic School, graduated from Sheridan High School, and attended Sheridan College and Montana State University in Missoula, where he was a member of the ski team.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing music, downhill skiing, riding horses, ranch work, attending music festivals, and time spent with friends and family.

He was a member of the original international cast of “Up With People” and played in bands professionally for many years.

He was a personal representative and venue manager for Canadian singer Ian Tyson.

Mr. Taberna was a volunteer fireman with the Big Horn Fire Department for 22 years, a ski instructor for 35 years, and a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America.

Survivors include his wife, Paula; a son, Joseph Paul Taberna of Big Horn; two daughters, Magdalena Rose Taberna and Margaret Lee Taberna, both of Big Horn; a half sister, Jackie Green; and three stepsisters, Cinder Destefano and Shannon Dahl of Sheridan and Jerry Lee Hershrud of Columbus, Mont.
