James J. BOURKE II 1947 - 2020 SHS 1965

James J. Bourke, II, “Stoney”, 73, of Dale City, Virginia, passed away Monday, March 2, 2020.

Jim was born February 24, 1947, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to James and Eloise Bourke. He graduated from Sheridan High School in May 1965 and entered the Navy on July 9, 1965.

He is survived by his wife, Gwendylon of 46 years; daughters Michelle (spouse Mark Moore) and Sandra (spouse Brent Lazerson) as well as four grandchildren, Marcella and Mark Jr. Moore, Emma and Sydney Lazerson. He is survived by two younger brothers, Michael and Ronald Bourke.

Jim retired from the Navy in 1989 and continued in the fleet reserves for 4 more years to fully retire with 30 years of service. He had a highly decorated career in the Navy, as he earned seven Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars and was part of Seal Team One. He also served three tours in Vietnam. Jim retired as a Command Master Chief and was very respected and loved among shipmates, family, and friends.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed watching Westerns (especially anything with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood). He was a big Star Wars fan and animal lover, enjoyed camping, loved BBQs, and valued spending time with family and friends. Oh and loved online shopping. And as with any true sailor, he loved his seafood. Jim was always the man who would step in and help anyone out and was the first to perform “minor” surgery (like giving stitches) on family and friends in their time of need.

Jim was a strong man and one of a kind. He survived a liver transplant of 22 years (which is very uncommon) and was a kidney transplant recipient of 1.5 years. Anyone who knew him could say he had more than nine lives and was made of steel. So, in our eyes, he was our Superman.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of James J. Bourke II.
