Dorothy June Phillips, 67 of Alexandria, Virginia, died on Monday, March 27, 2006, in Fairfax Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia.

Memorial services will be held with family and friends in Alexandria, VA and Sheridan, WY.

Ms. Phillips was born on February 25, 1939 in Sheridan, Wyoming, to Eula May Phillips. Her father was Roy A. Harrison, Sr. She attended Sheridan public schools, graduating with the class of 1957 from Sheridan High School. She received an Associates Degree from Laney College, Oakland, California.

She spent most of her adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area, particularly in Oakland, CA. As a community activist, she worked in the realm of civil and human rights. She helped establish the Black Panther Newspaper and managed the Black Panther night club in Oakland, CA. She helped establish a grassroots community breakfast program in the Oakland Public School system during the 1970’s. Her work as a contract investigator, inspecting women and minority freeway construction sites, began in Oakland, CA. After relocating to Alexandria, VA, she continued her work as a contract investigator for the Equal Employment Opportunity commission until her retirement five years ago. After her retirement she continued to be active in various volunteer activities and she participated with the Institute for the Advancement of Service, particularly within “A Course of Miracles” study group.

She was preceded in death by both her mother and her father.

Survivors include four brothers, Richard Phillips, Galesburg, IL; James Askew, Baltimore, MD; Roy A Harrison, Jr, San Francisco, CA; Robert McClendon, Longmont, CO; and one sister, JulEster Grant, Sheridan, WY as well as three aunts, numerous nephews and nieces, cousins and great-nephews and nieces.
