He died April 22, 2006, at his residence in Ranchester.

He was born March 3, 1939, to Harry M. and Ruth Mathis in Sheridan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and fought during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 24 years until his retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed reading, collecting books and hats and spending quiet time in the Big Horn Mountains.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his brother, George Mathis and his wife, Pat; his niece, Melissa Mathis; his nephew, Michael Mathis and his wife, Jennifer and his great-nephew, all of Sheridan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, 82801.

Cremation has taken place locally. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
