Alice Marie STARKS Long 1937 - 2023 SHS 1955

Alice Marie Long was wife, mother, sister, friend, and, as she often said, “As onery as ever.” She had a long line of acquaintances and friends whose hearts she touched for 86 years. Alice stepped from this life to the next on Friday, September 29, 2023.

The first child of Leo and Kay (Landers) Starks, Alice was born on August 9, 1937, in Gillette, WY. She spent her days loving her dog, Buster, and riding her swayback horse, Snap. Her family lived in Portland, OR during WWII where her parents were welders on ships that were put into the service. Moving back to Wyoming they made Sheridan their home where Alice excelled in beauty, music, sports, academics, and being a big sister.

Alice became an accomplished pianist and vocalist. Being a tomboy, she loved ice skating, swimming, softball, horseback riding, and generally anything outdoors. Her softball team, The Bullard Hardware team took first place in the Sheridan Women’s Softball League. During school, she participated in plays, Future Nurses of America, Acapella Choir, and Swim Team. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1955.

Alice married Keith Long on February 14, 1955. The couple had three children, Keith Jr., Kristy, and Cheryle. Alice made certain that young Keith was fully prepared for Little League and Swim Team. She enjoyed teaching all three to read, play board games, and cards, play with dogs, and cats, and want horses to ride forever. She became a Little League mom, 4-H leader, Girl Scout mom, FFA mom, and one of the favorite moms of all her children’s friends. On April 12, 1999, she became the happiest grandmother in the world when her grandson, Christian Bradley was born. A great friendship developed.

Alice worked as a CNA and Ward Clerk at Sheridan Memorial Hospital for nearly 20 years. After retirement, she could play bingo, Cribbage, and Penuckle at the Community Center.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Kay and Leo, her husband, Keith, her son Keith Jr., and her son-in-law Kevin Bradley. She is survived by her daughters, Kristy (Walt) Kawulok and Cheryle Bradley, her grandson Christian Bradley, her Godson Michael Melneck, and her sister Lela Huntemann.

A Memorial Service is at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A reception will follow the church.
