Eunice NEJEDLY McEwan 1934 - 2013 SHS 1952

Long time former Sheridan resident passed away in Minneapolis on Oct. 1st, 2013. No obituary was written at the time.

Eunice was born on December 30th, 1934, at home in Sheridan to parents Albert J. Nejedly and Flossie E. (Berry) Nejedly. She attended Brundage and Coffeen schools and Big Horn and Sheridan High Schools, graduating in 1952. She also attended Sheridan College.

In 1965 Eunice married Lionel McEwan. They owned and operated the Maverick Supper Club until it burned to the ground in 1988. She and Lionel hosted many illustrious guests, including Prince Phillip of England in 1968, and in 1984 they served his wife, Queen Elizabeth, at a large party while she was in the area visiting the Wallop family. They also served Michael Landon, Kenny Rogers and the cast of "Wild Horses," Barry Goldwater, and a Chinese delegation visiting the United States. Eunice had a speaking role in "Into the Homeland" a movie made in the Sheridan area.

Since her college years, Eunice acted in many Civic Theater Guild plays, and won "Outstanding Rookie", "Best Supporting Actress" and "Best Actress" awards. She and Lionel also directed at least one of the plays. She served on the board of the Sheridan Theater Guild, and as President in 1988-89.

Eunice was a member of the first group of CASA volunteers and served as an advocate for children in court for many years. In 1993 she was elected to the Board of Sheridan County Commissioners and was the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Board, which she did from January 1995 to 1997. While serving, she worked on juvenile justice issues, and also was the head of the original steering committee to establish the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program in Sheridan.

She was recognized as an Outstanding Community Leader by the National Association of Town and Townships, nominated by the YMCA. She was also instrumental in launching the Sheridan County Historical Preservation Commission. She was a long time member of, and President of the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

McEwan was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Flossie Nejedly; her brother, Sonny Nejedly; Sister, Jackie Spainhower; and her loving husband, Lionel.

She is survived by her step-daughter Leslie McEwan, of Minneapolis, her sister, Peg Buell of Buffalo, adopted son Tom Wilson, and several nieces and nephews.

Her body was donated, at her wishes to the University of Minneapolis Medical school, and her eyes were donated to the Lion Eye Bank where her cornea was used to help another be able to see again. Her ashes were scattered in the ocean as were her husband's before her.

Many of her treasurers were returned to Sheridan recently by Leslie McEwan and are being sorted to donate to the Sheridan County Museum and the Wyoming Room at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.
