GREYBULL, Wyo. - Longtime Greybull resident, Axel Fabian Stockhouse, Jr., age 74, passed away Friday, March 9, 2007, at the Billings Clinic in Billings.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 16, at the Atwood Family Chapel, 620 Greybull Ave., Greybull. The Reverend Ron Lytle will be officiating for the services.

A reception for family and friends will follow the services at the Elks Lodge in Greybull.

Axel was born in Sheridan on June 2, 1932. He was the son of Axel Fabian Stockhouse, Sr. and Esther Estella (Barnes) Stockhouse. He spent his first 20 years of life in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School in May of 1951. He was named to the United Press International's All-State second team as their center in football in the fall of 1950. He attended Sheridan College from January 1951 to June 1952 on an Elks' Basketball Scholarship.

Axel joined the U.S. Air Force on July 8, 1952, serving his country honorably until June 1, 1956. He was able to serve on some duty stations that you have read about or seen in the movies: Japan, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and landed on several other islands on his way home, including a 12-hour stopover at Hickam Field near Honolulu.

On Oct. 18, 1956, he married Janet Corinne Edwards in Laramie. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Axel went to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He graduated from UW on June 1, 1959.

>From 1959 to 1963, Axel taught school in Medicine Bow. He then moved to Greybull in 1963 and taught business education at the Greybull High School until his retirement in 1997.

Axel was very community-minded and was the past presiding officer of the WEA, the Greybull Lions Club, the Big Horn County Shrine Club, the Greybull Elks Lodge #34, AF & AM, Big Horn Basin Master's Club, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, Wyoming High School Student Press Association and the Big Horn County 3-Wheeler Shrine Patrol. He was also a member of the Kalif Shrine Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, Gamma Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon, a UW social fraternity, and a charter member of Delta Eta Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon, a national business education fraternity. He was Past Associate Grand Guardian for the State of Wyoming Jobs Daughters. He served on the Greybull Centennial, many Wyoming Business Education Associations, as well as Wyoming High School Student Press Association committees. He was also chairman of the Greybull Senior Center.

He was recently nominated into Who's Who for the American Teachers Association and in June 2007, he was scheduled to receive an award from the Wyoming Business Education Teachers Association as an outstanding teacher.

Axel is survived by his loving wife, Janet Stockhouse of Greybull; three children, Rick Stockhouse of Billings, Cynthia Fisbeck and her husband Larry of Windsor, Colo., and Cara Blank and her husband Mike of Cody; two sisters, Carolyn Brennan of Sheridan and Josephine Butterfield of Roundup, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In memory of Axel F. Stockhouse, Jr., memorials will be received at the Bank of Greybull, 601 Greybull Ave., Greybull, WY 82426. Proceeds will go to the Greybull Senior Center or the Kalif Shrine Crippled Children's Transportation Fund in Sheridan for a scholarship fund.
