Former Sheridan resident Arthur S. “Art” Katz, 74, of Marmora, N.J., died May 5, 2008, in Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, N.J.

Memorial services were May 9 in Godfrey Funeral Home in Palermo, N.J.

Mr. Katz was born July 4, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Sam and Claire Katz. The family moved to Sheridan when he was 3 years old after his father became office manager for Sheridan Wyoming Coal Co.

Mr. Katz attended Sheridan schools and was a 1951 graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Sheridan College for one year, then spent one year at the University of Wyoming before joining the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean conflict.

While he was in the service, his family returned to New York. He moved back to the East Coast after being discharged from the service. He received his bachelor’s degree in business and master’s degree in geology from the University of Virginia.

He owned the Country Lawyer Restaurant and Gift Shop and Katz Seafood Market, both in West Chester, Pa. He later owned the Locust Street Deli and Courtyard Deli in Walnut Creek, Calif., then was a real estate agent in Ocean City, N.J., for 12 years before retiring in July 2007.

He returned to Sheridan for Class of 1951 reunions and during Sheridan-WYO Rodeo days.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; three daughters, Sue Kelly of Douglassville, Pa., Dianne Schmanek of Birdsboro, Pa., and Beth McClatchy of Phoenixville, Pa.; a sister, Judy Shanberg of Moraga, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
