John T. PORTER 1930 - 2016 SHS 1947

John T. Porter, 86, died on October 10, 2016, of a stroke, at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California.

He was born August 1, 1930, in Douglas, Wyoming, the son of John Porter and Clementine (Goon) Porter. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1951, and received his PhD. in Chemistry from Cornell University in 1955.

On June 19, 1950, he married Jane Britt, who survives him.

He worked as a research scientist in nuclear chemistry for General Electric in Schenectady, New York, for four years and at Corning Glass in Corning, New York for five years. Then he moved to California in 1959 to take up employment with General Atomic in San Diego, where he worked until 1986. Following retirement he worked in various consulting roles for many years.

He was a lifetime member of Sigma Xi, a national honor society of research scientists, promoting ethics in scientific research, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He loved spending time with his family, as well as woodworking, music and dancing, but the greatest work of art in his life was his marriage to Jane, weathering her many medical issues and taking complete care of her for the last 14 years.

He is survived by three sons, John T. Porter III of Killingworth, Connecticut, David B. Porter of Argyle, New York, and Paul C. Porter of Tucson, Arizona, as well as three grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson. His brother Bill Porter remains in Sheridan while his sister Mary Wyly lives in Oaxaca, Mexico.

In keeping with his wishes after a lifetime of science, he donated his body for research to MedCure, so his family's loss could be a benefit to humanity.

In lieu of flowers, his grieving family requests that memorial donations may be made to Sigma Xi at https://meeting.sigmaxi.org/porter-donation.asp
