SHERIDAN -- Funeral services for Alice J. Carnes, 78, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at the Church Of The Nazarene with Reverend Arthur Maendl officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Big Horn, WY.

A viewing will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Kane Funeral Home.

She died March 6, 2008, at her residence.

A lifetime resident of Sheridan, she graduated and married Richard Carnes in 1947.

She became active with youth as a distributor of the Denver Post in the 1940s and early 1950s, she was a sunday school teacher at the Open Bible Church where she was married, a school volunteer, and Brownie Scout Leader.

In the 1950s she rode a Harley and with her husband started the first motorcycle club in Sheridan. For 45 years they lived in the house they built by hand together.

They owned and operated two gas stations then built Carnes’ Auto Repair.

In the evenings she cleaned clinics and various other offices.

They bought and operated The Ideal Cleaners for 12 years.

She sold Walkins Products for 40 some years. She was a bookkeeper, clerk, and a seamstress extraordinare.

After her husband retired and closed the cleaners she continued to do alterations in her home up to the very day of her stroke.

For the last 15 years she lived in the Banner/Big Horn area raising beef to feed her family and friends. She also became an in home care giver, continuing to work even after breaking her back and neck in an auto accident at age 74.

She lightened up lives whistling to music, baking goodies for her friends and with her contagious laughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Richard.

She is survived by her children, Kenneth R. Carnes and his wife of Glenrock, Ginger Wallace and her husband, Don Carnes, Troy Carnes and his wife, all of Sheridan, seven grandchildren, twelve, great-grandchildren, and siblings, Margaret Kathleen Dahle of Colorado, Mary Gallagher of Oregon, Edith Carnes of California, and Roger Krout and his wife of Sheridan.

Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
