Hugh Owen JONES 1929 - 2014 SHS 1947

Hugh Owen Jones, 84, of Kirby, Montana, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 in Westview Health Care Center.

Mr. Jones was born September 1, 1929 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Hubert Hugh and Gertrude (Owen) Jones. He was the first of four boys. His brothers were Gregg L., Robert Dale, and Paul V. Jones.

Hugh attended the 1st through the 8th grade at Big Bend School in Kirby. He then attended high school in Sheridan, Wyoming. After graduating from Sheridan High School, he returned to the ranch at Kirby for one year.

Mr. Jones then attended the University of Montana at Missoula from the fall of 1948 to the spring of 1950. He had to return to the ranch because his brother, Gregg, was sent to the Korean War. Gregg returned to the ranch in November of 1951.

Hugh went into the Army in March of 1952 and attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and was Company Commander at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.

Hubert Jones passed away in the spring of 1954, so his wife, Gertrude, petitioned for Hugh's discharge. Hugh returned to the ranch in the spring of 1955. That fall he returned to Missoula to finish his college courses, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Business and Liberal Arts.

Hugh managed the main ranch in Kirby while Gregg and Molly were managing the ranch they had bought on the Cheyenne Reservation. Around 1966, Hugh moved to the ranch on the reservation and Gregg and Molly returned to the ranch in Kirby.

In the early 1970's the ranch bought what is called the Holmes place. If it wasn't for Hugh's business sense, none of these land acquisitions would have been possible. He was a good cattleman and a very hard worker.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Gertrude Jones; and his two brothers, Robert Dale, and Paul V. Jones.

He is survived by one brother, Gregg L Jones, (Molly), of Kirby, Montana; one nephew, Jerry Jones, of Kirby, Montana; one niece, Anita Lynn Vaughn. (Bruce), Boulder, Colorado; and one great niece, Danielle Jones.

Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

A Memorial Service for Hugh will be 1:00 P. M. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held following the service at the Elk's Lodge, 45 W. Brundage St.
