John T. “Jack” Switzer d2003 SHS 1946

John T. “Jack” Switzer, 74, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday in Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Mr. Switzer's wishes. Mr. Switzer was born in Sheridan Jan. 2, 1929, to Wayne and Esther (Waugh) Switzer. He graduated from Sheridan High School and Sheridan College and attended the University of Wyoming.

He left the university to go to Arizona after he and his brothers bought a ranch there. The ranch was later sold, and Mr. Switzer worked as a wrangler for the Flying E ranch and on the Desert Caballeros Ride held annually in Wickenburg, Ariz. He ranched in Arizona, Colorado and Montana before returning to Sheridan. He enjoyed photography, cowboy poetry and sports, was active in jackpot rodeos, and assisted as a rodeo timer.

He was a lifetime Sheridan Booster Club member, a member of the first Boys State group to go from Sheridan to Washington, D.C., in 1946, and a member of the After 50 Club in Sheridan and the Elks Lodge in Wickenburg. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob. Survivors include four sisters, Prudence Grunkemeyer and Marilyn Toland, both of Sheridan, Frances Brewster of Burlington, Iowa, and Nancy Haynos of St. Marys, Kan.; three brothers, Dean of Circle, Mont., Kenneth of Ojai, Calif., and Bill of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
