We celebrate the life of Millard Irvin Meredith, born February 27, 1929, in Sheridan, Wyoming, the only child of Millard Rodman and Sadie Edith (Alloway) Meredith. He passed away due to pneumonia complications at the age of 84 at the Riverton Memorial Hospital in Riverton, Wyoming on Sunday, September 8, 2013 surrounded by family.

Millard and his father ran an oil and delivery service station in Cody, Wyoming during World War II and through his high school years. At 13 he drove school busses, hauled crude oil, and guided hunters. His mother instilled a lifelong joy in music and singing, which he passed on to children and grandchildren. The Big Horn Mountains was the family destination for their passion of hunting, horses, and fishing. He passed that passion on to his son, grandsons and wife, Nanette.

Millard's education included graduating from Sheridan High School, Rocky Mountain College, and the University of Wyoming, where he completed a Master's degree in Education. He began his teaching career in Big Horn, Wyoming and then moved to Ucross to teach the upper grades while his first wife, Donna, taught the lower grades. His other early experiences included many years in Sheridan County as a teacher, elementary principal, and assistant superintendent/curriculum coordinator. From 1967 to 1970, Millard was the principal of the University of Wyoming Prep School in Laramie. In 1970 he and his family moved to Douglas, where he was superintendent of schools for 19 years. After retirement, he had three interim superintendent opportunities in Jackson, Douglas and Basin, Wyoming. He received the Wyoming School Boards Association Golden Bell Award in 1995 for his outstanding contribution to public schools in Wyoming. He once stated "public schools are so much a part of my life that all three of my children and six grandchildren have followed in my footsteps". Daughter Marcia teaches music in Wisconsin, daughter Michele teaches 1st grade in Wright, Wyoming and son Gary, was superintendent of schools in Greybull, Wyoming. They were the only father/son combination to serve as superintendents in Wyoming school history.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nanette of Riverton, Wyoming; three children: Marcia (Geoffrey) Scheurman of River Falls, Wisconsin, Gary Meredith of Greybull, Wyoming, and Michele (Rodney) Haefele, of Douglas, Wyoming; seven grandchildren: Jennifer (Brent) Hafele of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Stephen (Lisa) Scheurman of Plymouth, Minnesota, Kenyon (Johanna) Scheurman of Fort Collins, Colorado, Greg Meredith of Buffalo, Wyoming, Dean Meredith of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Randall Haefele and Ryan Haefele, both of Douglas, Wyoming; and three great grand-children: Evan and Rachel Hafele of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Caleb Scheurman of Plymouth, Minnesota.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Millard I. Meredith Education Scholarship Fund through the Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, Wyoming 82633.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 13 at Gorman Funeral Homes – Converse Chapel in Douglas, Wyoming. A public celebration of his life will be Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Douglas High School Auditorium in Douglas. Serving as pallbearers will be Jennifer Hafele, Ryan Haefele, Greg Meredith, Dean Meredith, Randall Haefele, Ken Scheurman, and Steve Scheurman. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Twiford, Bob Stinson, Glen Russell, Gale Lane, Earl Shatto, Don Jacobs, Myron Basom, Don Smylie, and Butch Scott.

The Gorman Funeral Homes – Converse Chapel of Douglas, Wyoming is in charge of the arrangements.
