LANDER -- Memorial services for former Wyoming resident Mary Hartman Rice, 76, of Sandy, Utah, were conducted March 30, 2005, in Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy.

Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander. She will be buried next to her husband, Raymond "Ray" Hartman.

She died March 24, 2005, in Sandy, of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Born July 27, 1928, in Hardin, Mont., she was the daughter of James E. and Agnes J. (Randall) McCormack; and was raised on a dairy farm near Sheridan through the Depression and World War II.

After high school, she moved to Lander, owned and operated a beauty salon, and married Mr. Hartman.

They raised their family in Lander, Crowheart and Banner.

Until 1980, she was Fremont County deputy county clerk. After 10 years of caring for her ailing husband and parents, they preceded her in death and she moved to Tucson, Ariz.

There she married Leo Rice.

She spent 25 years in Tucson enjoying the sun, her friends, travel, cards, bowling, and golf.

On March 14, she moved to Utah to spend her final years near her son, but went into the hospital on March 15 and remained until her death.

She was devoted to her children and family.

Survivors include four children, Carol Laurich and her husband of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Joanne Smith and her husband of Redding, Calif., Dan Hartman and his wife of Sandy and Kenny Hartman of Texas; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law.

In addition to her parents and Mr. Hartman, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes and Jeanne; two brothers, James and Kenneth; husbands Leo Rice and Les Pagel; and a precious granddaughter and namesake.
