SHERIDAN - Funeral services, with military honors, for Sheridan resident Frederick "Fred" Hinz, 76, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 8, at First Baptist Church in Sheridan by the Rev. Ken Doolin. Interment will be in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville.

He died Jan. 4, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, with his wife and children at his side.

Born July 27, 1927, in the family home in Sheridan, he was the son of John and Viola (Winingar) Hinz; attended Taylor, Central and Sheridan High schools; and graduated in 1945. He started work for the CB&Q Railroad in November 1943.

In July 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Chicago in Tokyo Bay. He was honorably discharged in September 1949 and returned to work on the CB&Q.

On June 16, 1950, he married Dolores Evelyn Krause.

He was recalled to active duty in the Navy in February 1951 and served in the Korean War until his discharge in June 1952.

A U.S. Postal Service employee for 29 years, he retired in July 1982; and then took tax classes. He worked for H&R Block from 1985 to 1990 and Strauser and Strauser CPA until 1997.

A 4-H club leader for 10 years, he served as finance officer for the American Legion; board member of the Big Goose/Soldier Creek Water District; and member of First Baptist Church and a deacon for three years. He worked with young people in the Sheridan community and staunchly supported Camp Bethel.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years; brother, Melvin, and his wife of Federal Way, Wash.; daughter, Suzette Moline; three sons and their wives, DeWayne, Gary and Mark Hinz; seven grandsons; 10 granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
