Duane FOSS 1928 - 2015 SHS 1945

Duane Foss, 87 year old Buffalo resident and one of Johnson County's most respected ranchers, passed away at his home in Buffalo on December 26th.

Private Family Graveside Services for Duane will be held at the Willow Grove Cemetery on Saturday, January 2nd at 2:00 P.M. with the VFW in charge of Military graveside service. Visitation will be held from the funeral home chapel on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A reception for everyone will be held at 3:00 P.M. at the American Legion. Donations in Duane's memory may be made to the Johnson County Library or to Johnson County Home Health in care of the Harness Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo. Duane was born to Lester and Edna Foss (Hepp) in Sheridan Jan. 21, 1928, and was raised in the Sheridan and Banner area. He joined the United States Navy upon graduating from Sheridan High School and served for two years at the end of World War II. Duane was married to Pat French in Hardin, Montana in 1947, and they had four children. They later were divorced. He married Margaret Wakefield in November 1978, and they have lived in the Buffalo area since that time.

In addition to ranching, Duane served as a brand inspector for many years. He was active in the Johnson County Cattlemen's Association, Johnson County Farm Bureau, and the VFW Post No. 2469. Duane was known for his personal interest and mentorship to young people starting out in the ranching business in the area. He was an avid reader, especially of local history and loved to play cribbage with people he often called "victims."

He was preceded in death by his parents Lester Foss and Edna Hepp and one sister Joan Christensen.

He is survived by his wife Margaret of Buffalo, sons: Jerry (JoDee) of Manderson, Joe (Linda) of Buffalo; daughters: Carol (Bruce) Duvall of Marysville, Washington, and Cathy (Tom) Waugh of Belmont, Wisconsin, stepchildren: Rick (Jennifer) Todd of Deadwood, South Dakota, Dianna Todd (Duane Engstrand) of Indio, California, Debbie Todd of Mesa, Arizona, and Paula (Pat) Campbell of Fall City, Washington, seven grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
