Colonel Robert Erland STOCKHOUSE 1925 - 2016 SHS 1942

Colonel Robert Erland Stockhouse, 90 of Greeley, passed away at Hospice of Northern Colorado on June 20, 2016.

Robert was born August 14, 1925 in Sheridan, WY, to Erland Victor and Frances Alberta (Gillett) Stockhouse. He married Shirley Jean Smith on October 24, 1992 in Greeley, CO.

Robert was born and raised in Sheridan, WY. He earned his B.S. at Black Hills State College in 1947; his M.A. at Columbia University in 1948; his Ed. D. at Stanford University in 1959; his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Texas in 1972.

He was a lifetime military serviceman in the U.S. Air Force serving as a navigator during WWII and a pilot during Korea and Vietnam. He enlisted in August of 1943 and was honorably discharged in August of 1971.

While in the service he lived in Sheridan, WY, Spearfish, SD., Montgomery, AL, Enid, OK, New Braunfels, TX, Sacramento, CA, Palo Alto, CA, Seoul, Korea, Kadena, Okinawa, USAF Academy, CO, Pendleton, SC, Cheyenne, WY, Evans, CO, Tucson, AZ and finally in Greeley, CO. He graduated from the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet program and was an aerial navigator in WWII. After he was discharged, he attended college for his B.S. and M.A. teaching degrees. He taught high school in Tenafly, N.J. He was recalled to USAF with a regular commission in January of 1948. He completed his pilot training, taught at the USAF Air University at Maxwell AFT, AL, served as a pilot in Korea and Vietnam and served as USAF Academy professor, completed a doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Stanford University, served as a Psychology professor, was the psychology department head at USAF Academy and retired in 1971 from USAFA. He received a Kellogg post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin, was employed as Dean of Students, later Dean of Faculty at Tri-County Community College, Pendleton, SC . He served as director of the Assessment Center, Aims Community College, retiring from Aims as Emeritus Director of Assessment in August of 1988.

He retired from the USAF with the rank of Colonel. He received the following medals during his service in the Army Air Corps and the United State Air Force: The Legion of Merit, The Distinguished Flying Cross, and The Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters. The Following service ribbons: Air Force Longevity Ribbon with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with one battle stars, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Small Arms Expert Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two battle stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal . He also received the USAF Commendation Medal.

Robert was a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, the Air Force Association, the Retired Officers Association, American Psychological Association, Rocky Mountain Psychological Association, American Radio Relay League (Radio Amateur MQØX). He enjoyed amateur radio, model railroading, model airplanes, was an avid reader, loved to travel, along with spending time with his grandchildren.

Robert is survived by his wife Shirley; son Robert, daughter Judy; 4 step-sons; sister Lois; 18 Grandchildren; 21 Great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Jean Elizabeth Bowman; brother Dr. Burton E. Stockhouse and his grandson Robert E. Stockhouse III.

A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Allnutt Macy Chapel. A private interment will be held Friday, June 24 at Sunset Memorial Gardens followed by services which will be held at 10:30 A.M. at the Allnutt Macy Chapel.
