Steve Richard SMITH 1921 - 2003 SHS 1941

SHERIDAN - Services for Sheridan resident Steve R. Smith, 82, were conducted Dec. 23, 2003, at Champion-Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan by Pastor Don Derryberry. Burial was in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

He died Dec. 18, 2003, at his daughter's home on Big Goose. Born July 11, 1921, in Banner, he was the son of Sam B. and May G. (Harper) Smith; and was educated in Sheridan. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II; was stationed in the New Hebrides Islands; and was discharged with the rank of chief petty officer first-class.

Returning to the Sheridan area, he married Charlotte M. Graves on Jan. 11, 1947, in Billings, Mont.

He worked at Sheridan Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 28 years and retired as chief of maintenance and repair.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church; Big Horn Mountain Lodge No. 143, A.F.&A.M.; Scottish Rite Bodies; Kalif Shrine Temple; and the American Legion.

His interests included carving, painting, hunting, leather-tooling, silversmithing, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years of Sheridan; two daughters, Cheryl Smith of Fort Collins, Colo., and Nancy Elkins of Sheridan; seven grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
