Barbara Rose JOHNSON Burkhardt 1923 - 1998 SHS 1941

SHERIDAN - Graveside service for Barbara Rose Burkhardt, 74, will be held today at 10 a.m. at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating.

She died March 20, 1998, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Sheridan, the daughter of John Jay and Rose Marguerite (Shrader) Johnson. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She took nurse's training at the old Sheridan Memorial Hospital with part of her training in Denver, Pueblo, and at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. She graduated from nurse's training in 1945.

While in Colorado, she met John F. Burkhardt and they were married Aug. 5, 1944, in Pueblo, Colo. They lived in Chicago for a time before returning to Sheridan. They were later divorced.

She joined the Army Nurse Corps in December 1953 as a second lieutenant and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. She was stationed in Germany and Okinawa. She attended advanced nurse's training at Syracuse University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She retired in January 1974 and returned to Sheridan.

She was a member of the Retired Army Nurse Corps, American Legion, VFW, Eagles Auxiliary No. 186, Wyoming Nurses Association and the University of Nebraska at Omaha Alumni Association.

She enjoyed growing flowers, knitting and the squirrels in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry "Beano" Johnson.

Survivors include a daughter, Janis Burkhardt Johnson of Sheridan; three brothers, George Johnson of Sheridan, John Johnson of Houston and Charley Johnson of Las Vegas; a sister, Anna Wyatt of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
