Marvin Kay THIRLWELL 1921 - 1994 SHS 1940

SHERIDAN - Memorial services for Marvin K. Thirlwell, 72, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St Peter's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Ray Clark. Committal service will be at 1 p.m. at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Masonic Circle.

Mr. Thirlwell died Oct 28, 1994, at his Sheridan home of a terminal illness.

He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Sheridan, the second son of Robert J. and Mayme (Blackford) Thirlwell. Following his graduation from Sheridan High School, he was employed by ' the Bank of Commerce until joining the U.S. Navy in 1941. Originally assigned to Treasure Island as a bookkeeper, Mr. Thirlwell was later transferred to Point Montara as a gunnery instructor.

On Aug. 7, 1942, he married Waneta Leonard in San Francisco.

In July of 1943, he was sent overseas to Subic Bay, Philippines. Upon his return to Sheridan, Mr. Thirlwell resumed his position at the bank until becoming office manager at Big Horn Coal in 1953. Five years later, he became manager at Pacific Finance and worked there for 20 years. In 1978, he returned to banking and retired from First Wyoming Bank in 1984. Following his retirement Mr. Thirlwell became a partner in Smith Irrigation.

During his youth, Mr. Thirlwell was master counselor of Demolay and received the Chevalier Degree for Honor and Valor. His memberships included Masonic Lodge No. 8, Scottish Rite where he was a 33rd degree mason. He was also potentate of Kalif Temple and a member of Jesters, Elks Lodge No. 520 and served on the Salvation Army Board. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 7.

He enjoyed reading, fishing, painting and yard work.

Preceding him in death was his son, Donald.

Survivors include his wife, Waneta Thirlwell of Sheridan; a son, Robert Thirlwell of Sheridan; two daughters, Gloria Shackelford of Round Rock, Texas and Nancy Naus of Gillette; a brother, Robert Thirlwell Jr., of Houston; five grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials either to the Shriners' Crippled Children's Travel Fund, Box K, Sheridan 82801 or to the Genesis Foundation of the Salvation Army, 150 S. Tschirgi, Sheridan, 82801 would be appreciated.
