He was raised on the Fryberger 4-H Ranch on Soldier Creek; attended a one-room school; and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940.

One of his greatest passions in life was playing dance band music on his saxophone. While still a boy, he began playing for dances at box socials at local ranches and played for many dances over the next 50 years. From 1952 to 1980, he sang and played saxophone in King Davis' Dance Band.

One of his proudest accomplishments was remodeling the family cabin on Big Willow Creek in the Big Horn Mountains, from its purchase in 1960 into the 1990s. Many happy times were spent there. After his retirement in 1982, the couple traveled the United States, Canada and Mexico in their Airstream trailer.
