William B. Carroll, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by family.

Memorial services are noon Saturday at First Baptist Church with Pastor Chuck Gifford officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Born Dec. 11, 1921, to Robert E. and Lavina (Watson) Carroll, he attended Sheridan schools, the University of Wyoming and Colorado College.

He joined Sigma Nu fraternity during his college years.

He attended Harvard for naval communications training and served nearly four years during World War II in the Navy, receiving a commission as ensign radioman second class. Much of his Navy time was spent in the Aleutians.

He met Nelda Mae Olson in high school, and the two married after the war on Jan. 2, 1947.

He was co-owner of Carroll’s Furniture in Sheridan, retiring in the 1970s due to health.

Mr. Carroll was a charter member of the YMCA, helping with fundraising for the current building.

He was past president of the Linden School PTA, selected by the governor as chairman of the civil defense committee, served on the city planning commission, and was a past president, secretary and treasurer during many terms on the school board.

A lifelong Baptist, he served First Baptist Church at one time on its board of trustees.

He enjoyed teaching his children to fish, chop wood, dig up stumps, drive a stick shift, shoot a gun, change a flat tire, and chase down window peekers with croquet mallets.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Clifford Carroll and Dr. Robert A. Carroll; two sisters, Ruth Driskill and Ethel Vance; and a daughter, Mary Ann Carroll Taylor.

Survivors include four daughters, Jane Carroll of Tulsa, Okla., Catherine Kiaie of Milwaukee, and Patti Prestfeldt and Margaret Sare of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit Hospice of the Big Horns at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801; Sheridan Senior Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan; or First Baptist Church, 3179 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan.
