Dorotha Jane 'DJ' BECKER 1921 - 2006 SHS 1940
OBITUARIES - CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - April 01 2006

CASPER -- Requiem Eucharist for Dorotha Jane "DJ" Becker, 84, will be celebrated Sunday, April 2, 2006, at 10 a.m., at St. Mark's Episcopal Church by Fr. James Corbett.

She died March 27, 2006, at Life Care Center of Casper.

She was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Sheridan, to C. Eric and Dorothy (Scullen) Becker.

She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940 and received her bachelor's degree in music from the University of Iowa.

She was an instrumental music teacher for Natrona County School District from 1947 to 1984. Upon her retirement, the mayor of Casper declared April 12, 1984, "Dorotha Becker Day," for her "countless hours during her 36 years with the Natrona County School District instructing thousands of students in music and helping them gain an appreciation for the world of music."

She was a lifelong musician, beginning at age 4 under the tutelage of her father. She was concert mistress for the then Casper Symphony and faithfully served at St. Mark's Episcopal Church through its music ministry. She took her love of music to shutins in nursing homes and to the community through the "Old Cowgirls" and the "Haywires."

Her hobbies were music, painting, sculpting, wood carving, photography, fishing, swimming and time at the family cabin in the Bighorns. There wasn't a musical instrument she couldn't play but loved her violin, mandolin and banjo the most. She made a home for many abandoned pets and is sadly missed by her cocker, "Leta."

Survivors include two nieces, Dorothy Monahan and her husband, Bill, of Belle Fourche, S.D., and Susan Becker and her husband, Daniel Taylor, of Sheridan; a nephew, Karl Becker of Preston, Idaho and loving cousins.

She was assisted in her later years by her many friends, especially Margot Glendenning, Dan Coughlin, Shirley and Jim Hunter and Marion Doody, to whom her family owes a debt of gratitude.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles E. Becker and his wife of Sheridan and Robert M. Becker and his wife of Brigham City, Utah.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mark's Foundation for Music, 701 S. Wolcott St., Casper, 82601, or a charity of the donor's choice.
