Jack Englebert SCHMAUTZ 1921 - 1989 SHS 1939

GREENBRIAR, Va. - Former Missoula resident Jack E. Schmautz, 68, of Greenbriar, Va., died of natural causes Monday, Dec. 4, at Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, Va. Specific cause of death was not available.

Born Nov. 8, 1921, in Dietz, Wyo., he attended the University of Montana . Although his studies were interrupted by World War II, he graduated with honors from UM in 1947. He later earned a master's degree at the University of Minnesota.

He worked as a big-game biologist with the Montana Fish and Game Department on management of white-tailed deer in Lincoln County. For 18 years, he was a range management ecologist, based in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of the Society of Range Management and Sigma Xi (national scientific honorary society), and a member emeritus of the Ecological Society of America and Wildlife Society.

He had resided in Greenbriar since moving to Virginia in 1971.

Survivors include his wife, June E Greenbriar; a son, Thomas H.; his mother, Stephani Volez; and two brothers, Frank Volez and Joseph Schmautz.

Memorial services will be 8 p.m. Friday at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Fairfax. .
