Sheridan native Mary Amschel McEwan, 87, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, in Hemet, Calif.

Funeral services were Dec. 30 at Inland Memorial Harford Chapel in Hemet. Private burial is planned.

Born June 6, 1922, in Sheridan, she graduated from Sheridan High School and was nominated Queen of the Sheridan, Wyoming Rodeo in 1941.

She married U.S. Army Air Corps 1st Lt. James Edward Amschel on April 15, 1942.

After he attended law school in Laramie, the couple moved with their two sons to Jackson, where another son was born.

They moved to Hemet in 1959.

She was a legal secretary and was active in the Ramona Pageant Association and Family Service Association in Hemet.

Mr. Amschel died in 1977.

She married retired Wyoming Supreme Court Justice Leonard McEwan in 1988, and they made her home in Story.

Mr. McEwan died in 2008.

Survivors include three sons, Edward T. Amschel, Peter Amschel and Stephen Amschel; a brother, Thomas K. Hurst of Sheridan; a sister, Barbara McConnell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit the Ramona Pageant Association or Family Service Association.
