1st Lt. Vern Halley HUNNELL 1921 - 1944 SHS 1939

1st Lt Vern H. Hunnell was the co- pilot of B29-#42-24452. On 27 Nov 1944 the B29's with Lt Hunnell and 10 other crew members on a bombing mission (15 A/c in total) from a base in India to bomb the rail yards in Bangkok Thailand. Their plane was hit by Japanese AAA fire and was returning to their home base with one engine on fire and some wounded crew members. They received permission to divert to a closer base, Chittagong (India) now Bangladesh. The B29 never reached their destination and the 11 members of the crew where declared MIA. Mar of 1946. They were declared KIA. 13 of the 15 B29's returned to their base in Chakulia, India
