Glenn D. SWEEM  1918 - 2001  SHS 1938

Glenn D. Sweem, 82, of Sheridan, died at the VA Hospital Tuesday, May 8th,
2001.  Glenn was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota on July 7, 1918 and
moved to Sheridan in 1935.  He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1938
and attended college at Greeley, Colorado.  On April 11, 1942 he married
Jean McKenzie in Denver, Colorado and they had three children, Glenn, Jr.
(wife Jeanette) of Port Charlotte, Florida, Barbara Jean (husband Alan
Barbour) of Laramie, and Craig of Sheridan.  Glenn was the proud
grandfather of 3 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 8
great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-grandchildren.  Two sisters, Lois
and Esther, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Glenn enlisted in the U.S. Army
Air Corp. and eventually became group bombardier on a B-17.  1st
Lieutenant Sweem completed 51 missions over Europe while based in Africa
and Italy.  Glenn was employed as a conductor for the Burlington-Northern
Railroad for over 40 years.  He held numerous positions in the Democratic
Party including being a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in
1974 as well as a member of the Electoral College in 1976.  He was
Vice-President of the Wyoming AFL-CIO, served as Assistant and then State
Director of the United Transportation Union and he was that organization's
Legislative Representative and lobbyist in Cheyenne during the State
Legislature for many years.

Glenn was an active member of many western history related
organizations.  He was past President of the local and state Historical
and Archaeological societies, working on numerous committees through the
years including contributing his knowledge and research to many historical
books, articles, and projects.  One of his most recent being the "Bozeman
Trail Adventure" at the request of the Sheridan YMCA.  He was on the
Bicentennial Committee from 1975-1977 and he was a long-standing member of
the Sheridan Elks Lodge.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held to celebrate
Glenn's life and his endless love of our local history.  A tentative date
for the memorial is set for Saturday, July 7th with details concerning the
time and place to be announced after completion of arrangements.
