OBITUARIES - THE BILLINGS GAZETTE - May 17, 2001

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Our husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, Robert S. Kennedy died Tuesday, May 15, 2001.

Bob was born July 23, 1920, to J.R. Porter and Callie (Waddis) Kennedy in Sheridan. He attended Sheridan schools and graduated from the University of Wyoming as a civil engineer and a ROTC commissioned second lieutenant.

Bob served in WWII and participated in the D-Day invasion. As company commander in the 23rd infantry, 2nd Division, he suffered shrapnel wounds in his right arm during the fighting at St. Lo. At 25 years old, Bob wore the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, European Theater Ribbon with two battle stars and Bronze Star with cluster. He met and married 1st Lt. Cecelia Gillis, an Army nurse from Sheridan on April 22, 1945, in Cirencester, England.

A rancher, Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wyoming Stockgrowers Association, Lodge Grass American Legion, past potentate of Kalif Shrine, Elks Lodge #520 and an active member of the "Better Breathers."

Bob is survived by his wife Ceil; four children, Kathryn, Bob (Jan), Jim and Margaret (Tom); five grandchildren, Kristen and Callie Hysell, Kurtis and Carson Steinhorst and Jake Kennedy; one great-granddaughter, Quinn Kennedy; brother John P. Kennedy and a wealth of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Kennedy West.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. on Friday May 18, from First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the Kalif Shrine Crippled Children's Travel Fund or First Presbyterian Church.
