Florence Jean FULMER Brown 1919 - 2016 SHS 1938

Florence ‘Jean’ Fulmer Brown passed away on Jan. 20, 2016, in Green Valley, Ariz., where she was spending the winter with her daughters, Barbara and Jeannette.

Jean was born Nov. 17, 1919, on a cold, wintery day in Sheridan, Wyo.

She was the oldest daughter of John Wilbur (Bob) Fulmer and Florence K. Covington. At two weeks of age, she was taken to Lodge Grass, where her parents were living. Thereafter, she claimed dual allegiance to both Wyoming and Montana. Her early years were spent on a ranch 13 miles east of Wyola. Since there were no schools nearby, she attended school in Sheridan, Wyo., from grade one to graduation. As her mother was needed on the ranch, she boarded with various people and often needed to walk long distances to school. She graduated in 1938 and headed to the University of Montana in Missoula. Her father and sister, Margie, drove her up for her freshman year, but after that she rode the train back and forth twice a year. Jean graduated in 1942 with a degree in history and English. She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority and is a lifetime member of the sorority and U of M alumni.

On Sept. 30, 1942, Jean and Francis Linden Brown were married in Billings. Part of their honeymoon was spent on horseback driving cattle from the Lodge Grass area to the Bull Mountains. They lived on a ranch in the Bull Mountains until 1948, when they bought a ranch out of Lodge Grass. Their three children: Richard, Barbara and Jeannette were born before the move.

In 1955, Jean moved to Billings and in 1957 she became the office manager for Hoffman Associates. She held this position until she retired in 1980.

Since retiring she continued her love of traveling. She volunteered for Meals- on-Wheels, ABT, WHC and various other organizations. She has been a member of AAUW, Senior Center, Grace Met odist Church, UMW and a church circle. Jean is very proud to have been a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Jean is survived by her three children: Richard Brown, Barbara Brown Bergum and Jeannette (Mike) Studer; her five grandchildren are Shawn, Angela, Jennifer, Jeanie and Nikki plus five great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her only sister, Margaret Hoffman.

There will be no services at this time, but a family gathering is planned for Memorial weekend. Jean will be buried in Sheridan, Wyo., in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery in the family plot.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Grace Methodist Church, Big Horn County Museum or the charity of your choice.
