A memorial service will be held Sunday June 24, 2007 for Margaret Crane Smith, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Sheridan, WY. at 1:00 p.m. David DuPree will officiate.

Margaret Crane Smith was born December 28, 1919 in Sheridan, WY. to Dr. Richard E. Crane and Beatrice Nardini Crane. At the time of her birth the family lived in Acme, WY. where her father was the coal mining company’s doctor. Margaret grew up in the Sheridan and Story area. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1938. She was the Queen of the Sheridan Wyo. Rodeo in 1940.

Margaret married Stevan B. Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 28, 1942 in Sheridan. After World War II Mr. and Mrs. Smith settled in Cedar Rapids and raised three sons. Throughout her life Margaret enjoyed horses, gardening, knitting, needlepoint and her pets. She was an accomplished gourmet cook who would never shy away from an opportunity to entertain friends and family.

Margaret passed away in her sleep April 5, 2007 in Cedar Rapids, IA. She is survived by two sons, David B. Smith and wife, Melissa of Fort Collins, CO., and Creighton B. Smith and partner Lisa of St. James City, FL.; a sister Nancy Browning of Wellesley, Mass.; and a brother Richard E. Crane Jr. of Hereford, AZ. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Alexander W. Smith, Ian C. Smith and Victor C. B. Smith.

Her husband Stevan B. Smith and Philip B. Smith preceded her in death.

Margaret spent many of the last years of her life back in Wyoming at her home on Little Piney Creek with her gardens, horses, dogs and cats. She was a patron of Big Horn Polo and the Ft. Phil Kearny Society and the Bradford Brinton Museum.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be considered to the Beatrice Nardini Crane Memorial Scholarship Fund at Sheridan College Music Department.
