Louise BURLEY Griffith 1919 - 2014 SHS 1938

Louise Burley Griffith died on August 28, 2014 in Tempe, AZ of complications from pneumonia.

She and her husband of 73 years Don (d: 2013) lived in Arizona for many years, the last 6 at Friendship Village in Tempe.

A proud and loyal resident of Sheridan, Wyoming, Louise always celebrated the beauty of the Big Horn Mountains, especially "God's Garden," the wild flowers all of whose names she knew. Her favorite was the Indian Paint Brush, Wyoming's state flower.

Louise Griffith was born December 2, 1919 in Oklahoma City, OK. to parents Arthur James and Gertrude Alice (nee Murphy) Burley.

Her two siblings Lawrence John and Marjorie Jean predeceased her.

She came to Sheridan as a very young girl when her father, one of the first veterinarians to examine range cattle for the US Dept. of Agriculture was assigned to Sheridan. She often told stories of early camping and picnic treks up the Red Grade Road and its challenges. She graduated Sheridan High School January 1938. After which she attended the Colorado Women's College in Denver where she was a Colorado University member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

Louise and Don raised 3 children: Bruce; Marcia (d: Bud Salmela); and, Leslie (d: David Engebretson).

Louise was an active and devout member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan, WY since 1935 where she taught Sunday school. She was a long time member of PEO Chapter AB in Sheridan and later joined the local chapter in Tempe. Louise worked as a teacher's aide at Sheridan's Linden Elementary School.

In addition to her expanding family, she loved knitting, playing the piano, classical music, horseback riding (most recently her horse Spring), crossword puzzles, bridge, reading and golf.

Louise is also survived by grandsons: James Engebretson (m: Susan nee Nichols), Michael Engebretson (m: Alicia nee Kafka), and Robert Engebretson; great-grandchildren Ellie, Tyler, David and Jacob Engebretson; and, nephew John Burley (m: Selma).

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church 2121 Colonial Dr. Sheridan, WY 82801 and/or Friendship Village Foundation- 2645 E. Southern Ave, Tempe AZ 85282.

Arrangements entrusted to Mariposa Gardens Funeral Care Mesa, AZ

Memorial service will be at the First Presbyterian Church Sheridan, WY on September 19, 2014 at 11:00 with a luncheon following the service.

Louise will be greatly missed.
