Claire Louise CALKINS Yorks 1918 - 2000 SHS 1937

SHERIDAN - Memorial services for Claire L Yorks, 82, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Nelson officiating. She died Sept. 9, 2000, at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan.

She was born July 2L 1918, in Sheridan, the daughter of LeRoy and Mildred (Nietmann) Calkins. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She moved to Seattle and worked building aircraft at Boeing during World War II.

In Seattle, she met Samuel Yorks and they were married in Portland, Ore., on April 29, 1944. After the war, they lived in Seattle, where she worked as a secretary. Later, they moved to Portland and she attended Portland State University and graduated with a degree in social work. After graduating, she worked for the state of Oregon, where she worked hard to help the disadvantaged. She received glowing letters of appreciation from state administrators for her tireless efforts. She retired in 1982 and moved to Sheridan in 1984.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1996.

As a member of Literacy Volunteers, Hospital Auxiliary and the Animal Shelter Board, she continued to care for people and animals. She was also a member of American Association of University Women, Civic Theatre Guild, Carriage House Auxiliary and the Creative Fiber Guild.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking and snow machining. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework and stained-glass work. She loved traveling and caring for animals, especially her cats.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Pelesky.

Survivors include a sister, Henrietta Songer of Sheridan; a brother, James Calkins of Homer, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may benefit the Animal Shelter, YMCA or the Senior Citizens Center in care of Delphine Toner, 1st Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan 82801.
