OBITUARTIES - THE CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - January 25, 2001

ROCK SPRINGS--Funeral services for John Oscar Shassetz Sr., 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vase Funeral Chapel with the Very Rev. Lukas Kotzakis of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church officiating.  Cremation will follow at Vase White Mountain Crematory.

Friends may call this afternoon and evening until 8 p.m. and again on Saturday until the funeral at the funeral home.

He died Jan. 23, 2001, at his residence after a sudden illness.

He was born June 5, 1918, in Monarch, the son of the late Andrew and Eva Boyak Shassetz.

He attended schools in Sheridan.

He married Nina Zanetti in Las Vegas in 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1977.

He was employed as a coal miner for various mines throughout Rock Springs and later worked as an operator for the FMC Corporation for 27 years until his retirement in 1980.

After his retirement, he was employed by the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office as a deputy sheriff.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 151, the American Legion, the National Rifle Association and the North American Wildlife Federation.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and accordion music.

Survivors include two sons, John Shassetz Jr., and his wife and Mario Shassetz and his wife, all of Rock Springs; four daughters, Nina Sue Chambers of Rock Springs, Reena Tarufelli of Rock Springs, Judy Neufer of Cody and Marlene Lapille of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Eugene Boyak of Rock Springs; one sister, Nellie Frolic of California; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Paul, Andy, Raymond and Archie; and sisters, Ann and Amelia.

The family will receive friends at the home of John and Patsy Shassetz, 497 Mesa Dr., Rock Springs.
