Agnes Cecilia GILLIS Kennedy 1928-2006 SHS 1936
Ceil was born on November 22, 1928 in Billings, MT to James H. and Agnes C. Gillis, (Berthier), of Nova Scotia who homesteaded near Pictograph Caves. At the age of eight, Mom moved with her family to Sheridan, Wyoming where James was a stationary (steam) engineer and manager of the Sheridan Laundry.

Mom attended Holy Name School and graduated in 1936 from Sheridan High before earning a nursing degree at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1939. After practicing at the Sheridan Clinic, Mom enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps on October 19, 1943 and was billeted to England.

Mom saw the worst aspect of war, its effects on the young servicemen and women of both sides who passed through her care. She was a true war heroine. One of the servicemen to whom she administered was Captain Robert S. Kennedy, also of Sheridan. Bob and Ceil renewed and deepened their previous acquaintance and were married at Saint Peter’s Church in Cirencester, England on April 22, 1945.

After the war they returned to Sheridan from where Bob managed ranches near Lodge Grass, Montana and on the Little and Big Powder Rivers and near Clearmont in Wyoming for Faddis Kennedy Cattle Co. and Ceil was a housewife raising four children, was active in the Presbyterian Church, P.E.O., Chapter B, and numerous community organizations.

Ceil was a loving wife, mother and friend. She stayed in contact with her fellow nurses of “Hut 124” for the rest of her life and was proud of her service in “The Big One.”

Mom’s parents, husband Bob and brothers Roy and Jim preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children, Kathryn, Bob (Jan), Jim and Margaret (Tom); five grandchildren, Kristen and Callie Hysell, Jake (Kami) Kennedy and Kurtis and Carson Steinhorst; 2 great grandchildren; sisters Myrtle Luckett of Jackson, Mississippi and Rosie Bennick of Sheridan, Wyoming; and her brother, Neil of Denver.

Mom peacefully returned to her Lord and rejoined Dad on February 4, 2006. We loved you Mom. May you rest in peace.

Memorial service will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, February 9, 2006 from First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Kennedy may be made to the Shrine Children’s Travel Fund, Box K, Sheridan, WY, 82801 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
