Edith MOSS Thurber 1918 - 2008 SHS 1935

Sheridan native Edith M. Thurber, died of pneumonia December 1, 2008 at the home of her grandson, John Mitchell, in Tacoma, Washington.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on December 19th at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Kevin Jones officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in the church columbarium.

Edith was born February 11th, 1918 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Lulu Sarah (Taylor) Moss and Reginald Llewellyn Moss. As a child she enjoyed spending summers at the Taylor family gold mine in The Big Horn Mountains. She attended Sheridan Schools and graduated from Sheridan High School in June of 1935. After graduation she attended business school and worked in Cheyenne.

She met 2nd Lieutenant Orman Lee Hicks at a USO function in Cheyenne and they married July 20th 1941. Lt. Hicks was in the Army Signal Corps and the couple moved frequently when his duty station changed. Lt. Hicks was promoted to Captain while serving overseas. The couple had three children, Michael, Weslee, and Susan. On October 2, 1947, Mr. Hicks was killed in Germany by sniper fire.

Edith remarried in 1950 to Leo P Thurber of Billings, MT. Mrs. Thurber worked for The Sheridan Greenhouse for over 20 years as a floral designer.

She was then employed at Sheridan College, as the Financial Aid Officer, Director of Admissions, and various jobs in the business office until her retirement.

She enjoying bowling and golf and was an avid sports fan attending basketball, baseball, and football games.

After her retirement she and Mr. Thurber spent winters in Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Thurber passed away in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Weslee, a son Terry; she is survived by a daughter, Susan (Robert) Beckwith of Sheridan, grandchildren John (Lora) Mitchell great grandcildren Kenly, Ethan, Alli, and Kami; Taylor (Sheri K.) Beckwith, Cody, Joseph, and Deidrah; and Sheri M. (Paul Warrick and Hannah) Beckwith and a son Michael (Effie) Hicks; Milynne Rasgo, Tasha, Casey, and Megan of Denver. She is also survived by her many friends, especially Martha Boston of Sheridan.
