SHERIDAN -- Funeral services for Katherine Martini Reed, 94, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at First Christian Church with Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

She died Nov. 1, 2007, in Sheridan Manor.

She was born Sept. 25, 1913, to George and Caroline (Oberbach) Smith in a rock house on Tongue River. The home remains standing today.

She attended school at Piney and later attended school on Murphy Gulch, where the family built a home in 1922.

In 1928, she attended one year of high school in Gillette while living with her sister. She finished her high school years in Sheridan while working for Dr. Veach for room and board.

She acquired her normal training certificate through a postgraduate program and taught all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse on Murphy Gulch from 1934 through 1935, earning $50 a month.

She married Henry E. "Hank" Martini in Billings on May 19, 1934. They had five children. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1971.

She later married Harold Reed on Dec. 8, 1985 and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1995.

She had been an active member of First Christian Church since 1943. She was a member of the Odd Fellows, Eagles, Homemakers, Good Sam's RV Club and did volunteer work at the hospital and senior center.

She enjoyed gardening, being active with her church, volunteer work, TV game shows, crossword puzzles, writing in her daily journal, reading the Bible on a daily basis and spending time with her family.

Survivors include daughters, Joan Taylor Yuma, Ariz., Judy Lawrence of Greenfield, Mo.; her son, Jerry Martini of Sheridan; her sister, Dorothy Anderson of Olympia, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit First Christian Church.

Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
