Sheridan native Calla ‘Gene’ (Kurtz) Lewis, 93, of Meeteetse died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, in the Powell Valley nursing home.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Meeteetse under direction of Ballard Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Meeteetse Cemetery.

Mrs. Lewis was born Jan. 26, 1913, in Sheridan to Martha E. (Packard) and Noah V. Kurtz. She attended Coffeen Elementary School and Sheridan High School and graduated from the University of Wyoming with a teaching degree. She taught schools in Glenrock, Meeteetse and at the EV Ranch cookhouse in Kirby, Mont.

She married John Joseph “Jack” Lewis on Aug. 11, 1940.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and its Thrift Shop, Meeteetse Senior Citizens and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Sam, Rodger and Allen.

Survivors include two sons, Denny of Meeteetse and Joe of Sheridan; two daughters, Becky Bennett of Meeteetse and Nancy Dearcorn of Dayton; two brothers, James A. Kurtz and Joseph D. Kurtz, both of Washington; a sister, Mary Jane Culver of California; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
