OBITUARTIES - CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - October 27 2004

CASPER - Services for Casper resident Jessie Grace VanWinkle, 95, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church by Fr. Thomas Johnson.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Newcomer Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Inurnment will be in St. Mark's Columbarium.

She died Oct. 24, 2004, at Wyoming Medical Center.

Born Oct. 3, 1909, in Sheridan, she was the daughter of George Albert and Jessie (Paver) Scullen; was raised and educated there; and graduated from Sheridan High School.

She moved to Casper in 1929 and started working as a telephone operator for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. During World War II, she was the evening chief operator.

On Dec. 31, 1945, she married Albert O. VanWinkle at St. Mark's Church. He preceded her in death in October 1966, after 20 years of marriage.

She became the switchboard operator for Ohio Oil Co., later Marathon, and worked there until her retirement in 1971.

A violinist with Casper Philharmonic, later Casper Symphony Orchestra, she was a member of Royal Neighbors, Order of Eastern Star No. 4 and St. Mark's Altar Guild; and was a 75-year member of St. Mark's. She enjoyed bowling and fishing.

Survivors include her nephew, William Ausmus, and his wife of Hardin, Mont.; five nieces, Ann Conkling of Casper, Margaret Buckley of Sheridan and Dortha Jane Becker, Anne Houser and Jan Schickentanz and her husband, all of Casper; and numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, infant Sarah Scullen and Anna Hansen, Beulah Ausmus and Dorothy Becker; and two brothers, Danal and George Scullen.
