OBITUARIES - CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - August 31, 2002

SHERIDAN - Funeral services for Sheridan resident Nellie R. Kaufmann, 91, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joseph Keys.  Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

She died Aug. 29, 2002, in Sheridan Manor.

Born Dec. 13, 1910, in Hillsboro, Ohio, she was the daughter of John and Elva (Willett) McConnaughey; and was raised and educated in Sheridan.  She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1928.

After earning a teaching degree through the Normal Training Program, she taught in Pasaic and Ucross.

She met Fred Kaufmann while teaching in Ucross and they were married June 4, 1932, in Billings, Mont.

They farmed for a short time on the Weagle Ranch in Ucross and on Prairie Dog Creek, east of Sheridan.  The couple then moved to Buffalo to operate a dairy farm.

In 1943, they bought the Shady Lane Ranch in Ucross, selling it in 1968 and moving to Sheridan.  They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1982.

After her husband's death in 1990, she lived with her sister, Alice McConnaughey, in Sheridan.

Active in several community activities, including the Double Seven Club in Buffalo, Piney Women's Club and Chapter AM, PEO, she sang in a gospel quartet of neighbors in the Ucross area; served on the Ucross school board for several years; and supported and assisted many local and county 4-H programs.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Don Kaufmann of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jerry Kaufmann, of Buffalo; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
