OBITUARIES - CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - June 15 2005

SHERIDAN -- Services for Sheridan resident Thelma Elizabeth Landen, 95, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 15, at the United Methodist Church in Sheridan.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Champion-Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan.

She died June 11, 2005, at Sheridan Manor.

Born Nov. 27, 1909, in a tent on a ranch in northern Sheridan County, she was the daughter of Margaret (Morgan) and Calvin E. Erbaugh. Her parents then homesteaded on a ranch on Young's Creek in southern Montana, where she was raised.

She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1927; completed normal training during her senior year; and immediately began teaching in a rural elementary school. In 1955, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming.

On March 4, 1929, she married Si Landen in Hardin, Mont. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1972, after 42 years of marriage.

She taught in the elementary schools of rural Sheridan County for 37 years, spending the last 17 as a first-grade teacher in Tongue River School District.

An active member of the United Methodist Church, she taught adult Sunday school for many years and worked with United Methodist Women. She was an excellent seamstress and, in later years, was known for making purses from recycled denim. Many hours were spent playing pinochle, dominoes and Scrabble at Sheridan Senior Center and she loved walking within the community.

She also belonged to Daughters of the Nile, AARP, Wyoming Education Association, Sheridan Retired School Employees, and Sheridan Woman's Club; and was a charter member and past president of Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Halene and Chuck Graves of Sheridan; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Alonzo, Philip and Lawrence Erbaugh.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sheridan Senior Center, UMC, or a charity of the donor's choice.
