Pauline R. Holmes, 83, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Holmes was born March 25, 1919, in Sheridan to Paul and Ruth (Chapman) Workman. She grew up in and around Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She worked at Fryberger's Guest Ranch and met Ray Holmes there. They married Jan. 18, 1940, in Gillette. They worked and lived at more than a dozen ranches in Wyoming, Colorado and Montana from 1940-68. They spent the next 12 years at the Diamond Cross Ranch in Birney, Mont., until late 1980 when they moved to Sheridan. The couple were featured in a 1981 television documentary on ranching, “On the Cowboy Trail,” and in the book, “Working Cowboy,” published in 1995. Mrs. Holmes enjoyed cooking, painting, sewing and gardening and was an active member of the Cowbells (now Sheridan County CattleWomen). She spent many years working with 4-H groups. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Dupree of Chevy Chase, Md., and three grandchildren.
