OBITUARIES - THE SHERIDAN PRESS - November 26 2003 Former Sheridan resident Freda M. Monroe Surface, 97, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, in Canon City, Colo.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Mrs. Surface was born June 10, 1906, in Sheridan to Harry and Agnes (Moorehead) Pratt. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1924 graduate of Sheridan High School.

She worked in the Sheridan Journal office for several years after graduation.

She married Thomas Monroe Aug. 2, 1930. He died in 1959.

She married Ira W. "Bill" Surface Nov. 23, 1960, in Sheridan. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Surface started the first cafeteria in Northern Wyoming Community College (now Sheridan College) in Stolt Hall at the Wyoming Girls School. The college moved to the old hospital building on Saberton Avenue in 1954, and Mrs. Surface managed the cafeteria there. After the college moved to its present location in 1959, she continued to manage the cafeteria until her retirement in 1964.

She and Mr. Surface enjoyed fly-tying and fishing and traveled around the country delivering orders for their flies from 1964 to 1984.

Mrs. Surface was also active in the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of First Christian Church of Sheridan and its Christian Women's Fellowship.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three sisters and an infant daughter.

Survivors include a son, Marvin Monroe of Story; a sister, Harriet Griffith of Sequim, Wash.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
