OBITUARIES - CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE - May 2, 2001

SHERIDAN--Graveside services for Sheridan resident Ruth Phillips, 94, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

She died April 29, 2001, at Sheridan Manor.

She was born Aug. 11, 1906, in Sheridan, the daughter of Andrew and Beulah (Thownsend) Hammontree.  She was raised and educated in Sheridan.

On April 27, 1926, she married Herbert "Case" Phillips in Roundup, Mont., and they ranched near Sonnette, Mont.  In 1951, they moved to Hamilton, Mont., and ranched until 1954, when they returned to Sonnette.

They ranched at Sonnette until 1970, when her husband preceded her in death.  She then moved into Sheridan to be near her daughter.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, gardening, crossword and other puzzles, games and animals.

Survivors include a son, Carl Phillips of Sonnette; a daughter, Audrey Norwood of Sheridan; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Iowa; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Alvin; a brother, Ray Hammontree; and a sister, Evelyn Norton.

Memorials may benefit the First United Methodist Church.
