Judge Philip Stanley GARBUTT 1898 - 1988 SHS 1918

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Judge Philip Stanley Garbutt, grandson of John D. Loucks, who founded the City of Sheridan, was assistant attorney general of the state of Wyoming for five years, Sheridan municipal judge for five years, Sheridan county attorney for 12 years and justice of the peace in Sheridan for 22 years.

He was past president of Sheridan County Bar Association, District Bar Association, Sheridan Kiwanis Cut and the Sportsman's Club. He was a 70-year member and served as commander of the American Legion Post No. 7, honorary life member of the Salvation Army Board, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 8 for 68 years, and a member of York Rite Bodies Kalif Shrine and St Peters's Episcopal Church.

He loved the mountains and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Garbutt, 89, died Monday at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Sheridan, Wyo., a son of Cameron Willis and Annie May Loucks Garbutt. He attended school in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School and the University of Wyoming. He received his law degree from Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tenn., and was admitted to the Wyoming bar in 1923.

On Dec. 24, 1927, he married Violet Cermak in Cheyenne.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Beth Garbutt of Denver Colo., Ann Ryan of Fort Collins Colo., and Nancy Newton of Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother, Cameron of Carbondale, Illinois.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 9 am Thursday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Private graveside services will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
